Depends whether you're a healer/protter or a smiter.

I find smite works really well as Mo/A using Assassin's Promise, however, you give up an elite slot for that. Mo/Me is also popular with the echos and other recharge decreasers.

Mo/Me is also good for healer/protters for energy management.

As you get in to PvP, you may consider Mo/W for knockdown preventions and other self preservation skills. Mo/Ps are prevalent in JQ (buuut I just noticed your screen-name, so Mo/P might be out).

Bear in mind you will freely be able to change your secondary profession to anything you want as you get further into the campaign and ascend. So what you choose initially really isn't a big deal. Also, making every PvE decision with PvP in mind may be moot, since having a dedicated PvP slot is vastly preferred for serious PvP.

Taking a look at the stickied guide or a quick search would do no harm.

If you want to be good at monking, go Mo/W or Mo/A and don't use /Me or /E energy management because it's a crutch.

Otherwise, going /Me for Auspicious Incantation (when used with Heal Party) or /E for Glyph of Lesser Energy.

/Me: I've seen people use Ether Signet/Hex eater signet/Leech signet/power drain and the like, but there's no reason to when you could use something that doesn't require attribute points such as Selfless Spirit, Signet of Rejuvenation (as a way to heal without energy). Inspired Hex is good for removing monster hexes though.

In the past monks running Life Bond + Balthazar's Spirit would go Mo/Me for Mantra of Inscriptions to power blessed signet.

The other use for /Me is for Arcane Mimicry for Mimicry of Unyielding Aura (UA).

I think for a beginner monk, you should take Ether Signet. But try also to manage your energy with out using it, so if you could manage your energy, that would be great, you can remove it. But if you didn't, you may keep it for not getting into troubles while healing.

I use Me or Ele for crutches. Although Mesmers have extra benefits, like Echo and Arcane Mimicry (a HB / UA duo). I like to run full prot also, which is not very energy efficient, but I have my fun. GoLE comes in handy.

PVP is a different animal. You'll want to run warrior / assassin for self preservation.

I use Mesmer to Arcane Echo Roj and Ele when healing. GoLE is needed for heal party if a BiP necro is not present. Other than Me or Ele PvE only skills such as AoS(Air of Superiority) are excellent energy management while recharging your most OP skill, Seed of Life.

The mesmer skill arcane mimicry is really only needed in elite areas where you need bigger heals that HB or UA cant provide by themselves.

When you first start out, you really don't need to be too overly concerned about your secondary. Around the same time that you really get to use it (because you have enough attribute points and skills), you'll be able to change it to whatever you want/can, whenever you want. You'll also be able to save various builds with various secondaries as Templates, and load them whenever you're in an outpost.

So, for now, I'd suggest Mesmer or Ele as your secondary. You can always change it later.
